The BMW 5 Series earned the coveted position of Best Luxury Car from the team at What Car?, and then went the distance yet again to be announced their Car of the Year for 2017 at the 40th annual What Car? Awards.

Every year, the team over at What Car? compare new vehicles from throughout the automotive world to fill the coveted places on their Cars the Year list. For 2017, 15 separate category winners were announced, from Best Sports Car (Porsche 718 Cayman 2.0) and Best Luxury SUV (Porsche 718 Cayman 2.0) right down to Best Small Car (Skoda Fabia 1.2 TSI 90 SE). Once those intense deliberations were concluded, the best of the best were compared to decide upon the ultimate winner, and it should really come as no surprise to learn that the BMW 5 Series took home the prize.

In the words of What Car? themselves: “The latest 5 Series is even more efficient than its predecessor and sets the class standard for handling and refinement, while its interior provides technology and a sense of luxury usually reserved for far more expensive machinery.”

Even within the luxury car segment, the BMW 5-Series’s cool blend of supreme sophistication, high-end technology, precise handling, and engaging power place it well beyond the reach of other models.

With multiple engine options, including diesel versions, refined suspension, and optional Active Steering, the 5-Series is surprisingly fun to drive for a larger saloon. You can even opt for the available Variable Damper Control (VDC) system, which lets you adjust the firmness of the suspension at will. The manufacturer’s range-topping Professional Multimedia system allows control of your driving environment through a 10.2in widescreen, and there’s plenty of space for passengers and cargo alike.

As summed up by What Car? editor Steve Huntingford: “The BMW 5 Series is no stranger to success at the What Car? Awards; it’s something of a dynasty that has always stood for excellence, but the latest model moves things on again in all the areas that matter most to buyers.”

Even better, the top dogs over at BMW seem to be using the 5-Series as a template for future success. Upon accepting their What Car? Car of the Year Away, one official stated that the new seventh-generation model is a “brand-shaping saloon” that “points the way into the future.”
